Rethinking the work display

How the shape of a work display can support the changing shape of a task.

Consider writing a proposal. The document is your immediate task, but completing it also requires a budget, source material, and a conversation with a colleague. You move among them to check a figure, support an argument, or clarify a decision.

Those materials belong to the same activity. At any moment, though, they ask for different amounts of space and attention.

A work display gives that activity a physical setting. Its dimensions influence how much material can remain visible, where you can put it, and how the arrangement changes when another part of the task takes priority. Designing that setting begins with the work itself.

Follow the work

Imagine the proposal open in front of you, with a cost spreadsheet, a source document, and a project conversation nearby.

While drafting, the proposal needs enough room for sustained reading and writing. The spreadsheet matters because you are referring to a particular total. The source document supports a claim. The conversation contains a decision you want to preserve in the wording.

Then the total looks wrong. You turn to the spreadsheet and need room to examine the calculation. The proposal becomes supporting material: its proposed scope helps explain which costs belong in the budget. You have changed applications while continuing the same task.

After correcting the figure, you return to the proposal. Ideally, the surrounding materials still have recognizable places. Each remains available without requiring the same prominence as the document you are editing.

This is the spatial relationship explored by FocalContextual, the model introduced in OpenWorkspace. A focal region accommodates primary content, while supporting material occupies the surrounding context. Content can move between those roles as attention changes.

The physical design question follows: what shape of display gives that relationship useful room?

Give the same task different spaces

Start with a conventional single screen. You can give the proposal most of the space and switch to the other materials when needed. You can also arrange windows alongside one another, dividing the available area. Either approach can serve a task with modest supporting material.

A second monitor creates another substantial area. You might dedicate one screen to the proposal and use the other for reference material. That division can be useful and easy to maintain. When the budget becomes the main task, you can work on its screen or move it into your preferred working position. The physical boundary helps define the arrangement, while also placing a boundary through it.

An ultrawide display removes the central bezel and makes horizontal arrangements possible across one surface. The proposal, budget, and sources can sit beside one another. As more supporting material is added, the layout raises a question: how far sideways should the task extend?

WorkDisplay explores a continuous surface with more room vertically as well as horizontally. That creates another possibility: arranging context around a primary working area, using the space above, below, and beside it according to the material involved.

The useful comparison is the same proposal, with the same supporting documents, at comparable text sizes. How much of each document remains usable? What has to be hidden or resized? What happens when the spreadsheet takes priority? These questions reveal more about the arrangement than the number of windows that fit in a promotional image.

The WorkDisplay concept

Keep the focal region horizontally centered, with the budget above and source beside it. A tall, narrow chat thread fills the right edge. Only a small gap remains below the focal region.

The latest reply stays at the bottom; shorter viewports show less of the earlier conversation. Different monitor sizes, a portrait monitor, or other layouts would change what remains visible. Assumed outlines: 16:9 for each conventional monitor, 21:9 for the ultrawide, and approximately 3:2 for WorkDisplay, based on the existing ratio study. The drawings are not to a common physical scale. The WorkDisplay drawing is a simplified front elevation; curvature and adjustment are omitted. No screen diagonal, resolution, pixel density, viewing distance, or final product dimensions are assumed.

Choosing the shape of a work display

Additional height invites different uses of the surrounding space. A reference document might benefit from a taller window. A short conversation might fit beneath the primary task. A budget may need width once its detailed columns become relevant. The value of the space depends on what occupies it.

The outer areas also need to be considered from the position of the person using the display. Can someone comfortably read material there? Which areas suit a brief reference, and which suit sustained work? How does moving the display change that relationship?

Curvature, proportions, and adjustment all become part of the same design problem. They influence how a continuous surface is presented to the person at the desk. A useful arrangement must account for the desk and the person as well as the windows on screen.

It must also allow restraint. A project conversation may deserve a place while a decision is being made, then be closed. Some stages of work need extensive context; others benefit from leaving most of the surface quiet. Available space gives the user choices about what stays visible.

Evaluate the transitions

A useful evaluation would follow people through complete tasks, including the moments when their attention changes.

In the proposal example, we could examine how easily someone finds the relevant source, checks the budget, and resumes writing. We could observe the window movement and rearrangement involved, whether important material remains legible, and whether the person loses their place along the way. Accuracy and reported comfort would matter alongside completion time.

The comparison should also include simpler tasks. An arrangement that helps with several related documents may offer little advantage when someone needs only one. Those differences would help establish where the concept is useful and how it should adapt.

These are questions for evaluation. The concept illustrates a possible arrangement; it does not establish a measured productivity or comfort benefit.

From arrangement to environment

WorkDisplay explores the physical setting for a desktop organized around focus and context. The proposal is one example. Other activities bring different materials, different relationships, and different reasons to move something into focus.

The design ambition is to give those changing relationships a coherent place on the desk: room for the immediate task, room for what supports it, and freedom to revise the arrangement as the work develops.
